A Brief Word About Andy Rooney’s Rumpled Refinement

Legendary news commentator and TV fixture Andy Rooney has died from complications related to a minor surgery. He was 92. And while he’ll be missed most for hist witty and often sardonic musings on 60 Minutes, we hope his distinctly buttoned-up, casual style won’t be forgotten.

Because long before most of today’s popular menswear bloggers were even alive, Rooney preached the gospel of always having his shoes shined and his pants well pressed — he even admitted to having implements in his office to make sure his clothes always looked their best. And yet, in his appearances on television and in public, he always managed to achieve the casually rakish, unstudied — and yes, rumpled — look that guys inside and outside the fashion industry work really, really hard to get every morning.

That’s because Rooney understood the power of dressing well, but he certainly wasn’t beholden to fashion. He could look casual in a tuxedo (photographic proof of that is below), and he ruminated about the industry on his 60 Minutes segment once or twice, pooh poohing how ridiculous some fashion ads and editorials can appear.

We’ll miss his style, we’ll miss the man himself even more. Take a look at his musings on fashion — and his own personal style — below.
