Today, the Missoni company and family have spoken out about Vittorio Missoni‘s disappearance off the coast of Venezuela Friday morning. The chief executive was on a short flight between the island of Los Roques and Caracas along with his wife, two friends, and two crew members when the airplane went off the radar.
The company’s statement confirms the disappearance:
“The small plane they were travelling on has disappeared. This is all the information currently available. The company await news from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all other institutions involved, to whom the company are very grateful their swift help and assistance. As more information becomes available the company will issue further statements.”
Sister Angela Missoni, the company’s creative director, spoke to Italian paper La Repubblica today about hearing the news while on vacation in Oman with parents Rosita and Ottavio. “Our hope is that he is still alive,” she told the daily. “We want to hope, because for us it is important.”
After receiving word of the disappearance, the designer alerted her mother and called diplomatic authorities, waiting until the following morning to inform her father, the founder of the fashion house. “We decided to let him rest, he was very tired,’ Angela explained. “When, at 5:30 in the morning he saw us all standing and he looked at our faces and said ‘What happened? I am 92, but I’m not stupid.’ And so we told him the truth.”
