RIP Anna Piaggi, Vogue Editor, Journalist, and Icon

Anna Piaggi passed away today at the age of 81. The fantastical and oft-feathered journalist has had a profound impact on the fashion industry through her words and style since she began her career more than half a century ago.

The news of her death broke online this morning via the Twitter page of her friend Stefano Gabbana and was later confirmed in Italian newspaper La Reppublica:

RIP Anna Piaggi… :((((( ciao grande Anna!!!

Piaggi was a true eccentric, a visionary dresser, and an icon in the fashion world. We have long counted ourselves among her coterie of fans (we even wrote an ode to the legend last year), although she certainly was not lacking in high-profile admirers. Bill Cunningham once called her “a poet with clothes,” and indeed the journalist’s ensembles were unrivaled in their eloquence, wit, and whimsy. In 1986, Karl Lagerfeld published his “Fashion Journal” documenting ten years of Piaggi’s outfits through a collection of hundreds of sketches, and the designer counted her amongst his closest friends and most influential muses.

Her most celebrated work was arguably her Doppie Pagine (Double Pages) spreads for Vogue Italia, where she worked as a creative consultant since 1988, each a pastiche of text and imagery assembled with Piaggi’s signature flair.

RIP Anna Piaggi. You will be missed.
