With New Condé Scholarship, Anna Wintour Seeks Future Gianni Versaces To Save Milan

“When I first met Gianni Versace a few decades ago, I met a man who was just as passionate about art, opera, food, and furniture design as he was fashion,” Anna Wintour told WWD. “Every single Italian designer I have come to know since then has been exactly the same. Italy tends to know all about the best things in life for the simple reason it makes most of them.”

What has inspired Wintour to take a stroll down memory lane and sing the praises of Italian fashion? Condé Nast has launched a major initiative in which they will team up with five Italian universities to award scholarships in fashion, film, art, and journalism. Anna will join fellow Condé Nast editors-in-chief Graydon Carter, David Remnick, Jim Nelson, and Stefano Tonchi in selecting the winners, and it seems that she’s set on finding the next Versace. While we can’t imagine what could be better than getting a Miranda Priestly-esque nod of approval from Wintour, it surely ups the ante when Miuccia Prada champions the cause.

Prada explained:

“Italy’s rich cultural and artistic heritage has always generated outstanding creative results. Masterly craftsmanship, passed on from generation to generation, has given rise to well-trained artisans and skilled workers who contributed to secure the country’s worldwide reputation and preeminence in the fields of fashion and design. Condé Nast has long been a supporter of Italian business, commerce and the arts. This is a very important time to enhance collaborations to encourage the talent and creativity that will shape tomorrow’s leaders and pioneers.”

Between Condé Nast’s efforts, the Italian Chamber of Fashion’s restructure, and Costume National’s decision to bow out of Paris Fashion Week in favor of showing in Milan, it looks like Italian fashion is continuously on the up and up. See Giorgio Armani, the signora ain’t all that bad.
