“There is nothing new except what has been forgotten” probably isn’t the best mentality to have when you’re dreaming up a fashion shoot — especially when 2006 wasn’t all that long ago and readers’ memories aren’t as Dory-like as editorial teams would hope.
Still, the good people of Allure repeated not-so-ancient history with an “Avril Lavigne minus the 5 pounds of kohl” makeover story for their January 2014 issue. In one shot, the “Sk8er Boi” singer “rocks” a ruffly dress, scrubbed face, clip-in bangs and no lipstick. In the other, she stares pensively out a fake window, smokey eye back with a slightly-more-restrained vengeance.
Doesn’t the whole punk-goes-polished premise sound familiar? We thought it might. Harper’s Bazaar did it first (and better) seven years ago.
Whether it was groupthink or no-think, “The Beauty Expert” has a lot to answer for. But then again, who, in this age of reckless recycling, doesn’t?
