Will Mattel Start Making Bald Barbies For Cancer Patients?

Tens of thousands of people have gotten behind a campaign asking Mattel to mass produce bald Barbie dolls after the company made a one-off version for a young cancer patient last year. Now the only question is, will they actually do it?

Digital Journal reports that the campaign has been growing in popularity some time now. The Beautiful and Bald Barbie Facebook page had close to 17,000 likes as of this posting, all of which we have to believe were motivated by the idea that a bald Barbie would do a lot of good for a lot of little girls who have to cope with hair loss — either their own or someone else’s — caused by a variety of factors.

We would like to see a Beautiful and Bald Barbie made to help young girls who suffer from hair loss due to cancer treatments, Alopecia or Trichotillomania . Also, for young girls who are having trouble coping with their mother’s hair loss from chemo. Many children have some difficulty accepting their mother, sister, aunt, grandparent or friend going from a long haired to a bald.

We think it’s a great idea, even if the marketing would be a little tricky. Last year when Mattel gave the one-of-a-kind bald Princess Genesis Barbie to 4-year-old cancer patient Genesis Reyes, the company got a huge surge of comments saying that they should be on the market. And if there’s a demand, it’s only a matter of time before someone (Mattel or otherwise) starts creating a supply.
