L’Officiel Hommes enlisted Benicio del Toro to front its December issue, but he isn’t the only one that ended up on the cover. In the image, he’s carrying a naked woman. And we must say, we have very mixed feelings about this.
From an artistic standpoint, we actually really like this cover. It’s visually interesting and engaging, the photo is great, and we think pink was an inspired color choice. However, the implication of the unconscious-looking naked woman in del Toro’s arms is a little….well, disturbing.
What exactly is supposed to have happened right before the shot was taken? Is she a damsel in distress that was just saved by del Toro (because that would have some pretty sexist undertones), or is it something more sinister? We’re not quite sure, but the whole thing makes us a little uneasy — although not as uneasy as this cover did. What do you think of the image? Do you find it at all upsetting, or is it simply art?
