PHOTOS: Best And Worst Looks From The Essence Red Carpet And More

Points for consistency, at least: in keeping with the lackluster sartorial tradition of the past few weeks, several starlets stepped out this week at the premiere of 21 and Over, Essence Magazine‘s Black Women In Hollywood event, and more — but we didn’t see much that we liked. Are the worldwide fashion weeks offering no inspiration?

Gabrielle Union at least brought us something worth looking at, showing up to the Essence luncheon in a textured robin’s egg blue minidress and strappy black patent sandals. Quvenzhané Wallis looked festive and adorable in a floral frock, flats, and a stuffed animal purse. But eek, did Tamera Mowry take the keyhole cleavage cutout to unprecedented new heights. Literally. And what happened to Alfre Woodard’s killer carpet style from last season? We hardly recognize her in that shapeless white dress and frumpy sandals.

And nothing is quite as disappointing as when a knockout like Uma Thurman turns out in a drab ensemble of jeans, scuffed boots, and a dreary, amply-sleeved black blazer.
