10 Important Omissions From TIME’s ’10 Best Dressed’ List

Okay so a Top 10 best dressed list can technically only have 10 inclusions, but we still feel a bit ripped off by TIME’s Top 10 Best Dressed of 2013. Quality-wise, if not quantity-wise. While there’s always room for Solange wearing pants made from metallic clouds, we can’t say quite the same about potato face Channing Tatum in a completely normal suit that is only remarkable for the fact it’s not a stripper costume (TIME’s words, not ours).

And what’s wrong with stripper costumes, anyway? This year Dame Helen Mirren proved six-inch perspex heels have their place on the red carpet, while Rihanna made a decadent stripper-luxe statement in more Chanel than we ever thought it was possible to wear while being nearly naked. See below for more outfits that made a mark in 2013.

10. Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture
Not one to let her new haircut court all the controversy, Jennifer Lawrence wore a very sheer and very awesome Christian Dior couture gown to the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. On the runway it was a lot more boob-y, but Lawrence’s leotard put the focus on the gown’s hem, which swirled magically around her ankles.

9. Harry Styles in Burberry
Harry Styles cemented his FRower status this Spring 2014 fashion month in a multitude of great t-shirts. But it was this leopard print Burberry one that was later auctioned off at a $4,000 mark-up simply because he had worn it. And it was unwashed. Fashion is all about context.

8. Rihanna in Chanel
Terrible song, great Chanel. Nothing represents Rihanna‘s lazily decadent aesthetic like the Chanel advertisement music video for her new single ‘Pour It Up’.

7. Sienna Miller in Burberry
Sienna Miller made a return onto our sartorial radar at Burberry’s Spring 2014 show in this billowing furry crop top. The fact that it is cropped kind of negates the fact that it is furry, making it both wildly ridiculous and absolutely necessary at the same time.

6. Nicole Richie
Did Nicole Richie wear anything this year that was not incredible? If she did, it definitely wasn’t the crystal-studded Antonio Berardi crop top and matching pants she wore to host the’s 10th Annual Style Awards in September.

5. Kerry Washington in Marchesa
You know you’re winning the train game when the picture has to be taken sideways. Kerry Washington looked absolutely otherworldly in Marchesa at the Emmy Awards this year, not that we expected anything less of her.

4. Helen Mirren in Stripper Heels (and Elie Saab)
Dame Helen Mirren is the best and wore her Elie Saab gown with a pair of perspex stripper heels at the premiere for her new movie Red 2 in July. They were six inches tall, cost $25 from a store on Hollywood, and make her legs look like just the legs you would expect to be attached to a body like this.

3. Kim Kardashian in Givenchy
Bear with us. Kim Kardashian‘s Givenchy dress was the most punk thing on the punk-themed Met Gala red carpet this year. Think about it — being punk is being anti-establishment, and nothing says f**k you to a stupid theme than wearing a floral couch. Kim K. is punk.

2. Rooney Mara Met Gala
Rooney Mara also decided to ignore the dumb theme, to great effect. She wore Givenchy too, and looked more like a divine mythological being than a confused human trying to be punk.

1. Lupita Nyong’o in Miu Miu
Lupita Nyong’o was one of the best things to happen to red carpets in 2013. The 12 Years a Slave star hit many sartorial bulls-eyes, but we’ll echo the sentiments of online commenters Tom and Lorenzo regarding this ballsy cockatoo-print Miu Miu dress: we honestly don’t think there’s another person alive who could make it work.
