Horse Fly Named After Beyoncé, Marijuana Named After Blue Ivy

You know you’ve made it when you get a species named after you and your baby daughter’s moniker becomes a type of weed. In today’s weird but true news, both Beyoncé and Blue Ivy have become even more ubiquitous.

A 24-year-old Australian researcher named Bryan Lessard has named a horse fly after the pop star. As per the Associated Press:

He says he wanted to pay respect to the insect’s beauty by naming it Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae. Lessard said Beyonce would be “in the nature history books forever” and that the fly now bearing her name is “pretty bootylicious” with its golden backside. “Bootylicious” was the title of a song by Beyonce’s previous group, Destiny’s Child.

HA. The only thing that makes this slightly less odd is that the fly was discovered in 1981, the same year Beyoncé was born. Not to be outdone, Blue Ivy has gone and gotten a strain of weed named after her week-old self. According to TMZ, medical marijuana dispensaries in Hollywood have started to sell an herbal variety called OG Blue Ivy.

There’s no word on what Beyoncé (or Jay-Z, for that matter) thinks about all of this, but we’d like to hope they are equal parts flattered and weirded out.
