There are very few DJs/producers that we trust to remix our best-loved classics — especially ones that played an integral part of our childhood, like Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills.” Forget that we were still collecting tooth fairy money from underneath our pillow at the time of its release, the song’s message resonated with us then, and sticks with us now.
Fortunately, the 1999 anthem was put in the capable hands of Mercury Prize winner James Blake, who released the remix under his occasional guise Harmonimix. While there’s no denying that the track is transformed completely, it manages to still appease steadfast Destiny’s Child fans like us.
We miss Beyoncé, Kelly,
and Michelle’s LaTavia, and LeToya’s croons, but the warped male vocals layered with the smooth synthesized bassline is nothing short of rapturous and considering that today is Thanksgiving eve, Blake couldn’t have chosen a better time to unleash his latest offering. If you’ll be clinking glasses at you hometown dive tonight, this refashioned number must be your pre-gaming anthem — because there’s a good chance you’ll be running into your own good for nothin’ type of brotha.
