Britney Spears has released the original and unretouched images from the photo shoot for her Candies campaign to allow a side by side comparison with the final, airbrushed images actually used in the ads.
The Daily Mail called it “refreshing to see one of the world’s most famous pop stars allowing all of their imperfections to be highlighted.” And highlight those imperfections, they do.
While it’s always eye-opening to see the difference between before and after, the way the Daily Mail handled these photos feels a little gratuitous.
Imperfections that can be clearly seen in the un-airbrushed shot include blemishes on her calf, her larger thighs and, if you look really closely, you can see her feet have dry skin on them.
I’m looking pretty closely and I’m not sure her feet have dry skin on them so much as they look like normal feet, with skin that scrunches when you arch. You can almost hear the writer gritting their teeth as they do their best to be backhandedly polite:
Meanwhile, in the second picture, she is seen from the back – in the un-airbrushed shot she has areas of cellulite on the back of her thighs, a tattoo on her lower back (sometimes called a ‘tramp stamp’) is clearly visible and her backside is a little out of shape.
I think Britney honestly looks pretty damn good in that bikini, considering she’s got two kids and I haven’t seen the inside of a gym in three months and am currently subsisting on a diet of Canadian chocolate (courtesy of Mediaite’s Glynnis MacNicol) and the free tacos I got at the Roxy / Quicksilver / DC fall collection preview I went to earlier today. I’m also with Jezebel in being more than a little skeptical about the fact that Britney herself released these photos — Candies and Splash are credited with the images and there isn’t a single direct quote from the star — which only muddies the motives of posting these images in the first place.
Anyway, I’ll stop with the moral ruminations and get to the photos because, well, that’s the point.
