Cannons, Paint, and Handbags Collide With Lulu Guinness

Art and fashion walk similar paths, and frequently those paths happen to cross. This week British handbag designer Lulu Guinness facilitated such a cross when she collaborated with artist Joseph Steele, known for using paint and explosives, to create the Paint Project, a new line of limited-edition clutches.

Working in tandem, the artist and the designer hosted a party that featured live shots from a paint cannon, aimed at Lulu Guinness bags and covering them all in paint.

“All of my collections draw on art for inspiration in one way or another, so it was a bit of a no brainer really! It was only a matter of time before my love of art and designing handbags fused together,” said Guinness of the project. “I like a challenge, and exploring innovative new techniques, so Joe and I made the perfect partners in crime. I’ve not come across anyone who can use paint in such an impactful way, not since Anish Kapoor.”

They only created 180 of the clutches, covered in red, white, and black paint and all signed by both the designer and the artist themselves. Three of the bags will be sold on eBay as a donation to The Art Room, a charity that uses art as therapy for children. The other 177 bags will be available for $446 at Lulu Guinness stores and online.

Nothing has been said about the practicality of having a paint-splattered bag, but we imagine they’ll sell out immediately either way.
