Get ready for a wave of 1920s style, everyone. We’ve had a look at a few photos from the set of The Great Gatsby, and the casts’ 1920s costumes are so good, we wouldn’t be surprised if the decade’s style came roaring back onto the runways during fashion week.
Below, you’ll find a few photos of actors Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan), Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) on the set of the film, due out at the end of 2012. While Maguire and DiCaprio’s getups show just how little men’s fashion has changed in the last 90 years, everything about the way Mulligan is dressed and styled makes us yearn for the days of flapper-dom to return. You almost get lost looking at that dress — with its chic lace overlay and detail — before you notice that her hair is so perfectly coiffed it could be a helmet, and that she’s wearing fingerless lace gloves and hose. We hate hose and we don’t even mind this hose because everything else is so downright good.
When you step back and notice the flouncy hat she’s carrying and the gray Mary Janes that complete the look, it’s hard not to file this one away as near perfect for the era. It’s also hard to deny that Mulligan could walk down a red carpet in the same getup in 2011 and it would be blogged about for days.
Take a look at the photos below and try not to weep for our century’s style.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
