If you were still debating whether or not French First Lady Carla Bruni could be pregnant, debate no longer. Pal Sarkozy, French President Nicolas Sarkozy‘s father, told German newspaper Bild that he’s looking forward to having a granddaughter.
Media sources everywhere are treating Pal’s statement as a merciful end to weeks of speculation about Bruni’s growing belly. After being seen wearing her loosest fitting outfit to date at a meeting with the president and first lady of South Korea, Bruni was reportedly seen spending €300 on maternity clothes at H&M. Officially, President Sarkozy’s representatives aren’t talking, as it’s their policy not to comment on his personal life. But Pal is all up in the man’s personal life, and we don’t think he would lie about being excited for a grandchild to a newspaper as big as Bild.
“The two do not want to know the gender in advance, but I’m sure it will be a girl and as beautiful as Carla,” the mass-selling Bild newspaper quoted Pal Sarkozy as saying.
For her part, Bruni is keeping her lips sealed, too. And while we’re sure she’s and Nicolas are excited to make a new addition to the family, the timing of it all is pretty fortuitous. Some have suggested that having a baby could help Nicolas get elected to another term as president. Per The Guardian:
The Elysée, which has not commented on the Bild story, has not made any official statement, wanting to avoid accusations that Sarkozy was using his private life to win an election. If Bruni-Sarkozy is pregnant, she will likely give birth in the autumn, months before the French presidential election in April and May 2012. Pollsters had predicted that a baby for Sarkozy, could give the unpopular president a five-point bounce in the opinion polls.
The child will be Bruni’s second — she has a son from a previous marriage — and Sarkozy’s fourth. And though we couldn’t be happier for them, we can’t wait for them to actually, officially, formally share the news with us!
