From cover girl to First Lady and back again, Carla Bruni Sarkozy covers Vogue Paris’ December 2012/January 2013 double issue and lends her piercing blue editor’s eye to the glossy’s inside contents.
“I first met Carla Bruni in my early 20s when she was just starting out as a model,” editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt writes in her introductory letter, “and it has been a real pleasure to create this special Christmas issue with an old friend.” Of course, you wouldn’t exactly guess it was a Christmas issue from the decidedly un-festive denim shirt Bruni sports on the Mert and Marcus-lensed cover. But hey, it’s more than she wore last time she graced the glossy’s pages in 2007, when she posed nude save for a pair of thigh-high boots (quelle scandale!)
That’s not to say her appearance this time around will be entirely without controversy, however. The Daily Mail reports that the former First Lady has some choice words about feminism inside the issue, namely that her generation “doesn’t need” it, and that she herself is “not at all an active feminist. On the contrary, I’m a bourgeois. I love family life, I love doing the same thing every day.”
Of course, it’s hard to believe that she’s really doing the same thing every day when she’s swanning around inside the issue alongside supermodels Yasmin Le Bon, Helena Christensen, and Christy Turlington, the latter of whom might take some issue with her fellow catwalker’s statements given her extensive work on women’s rights.
But even if Bruni’s opinions leave a bad taste in your mouth, the issue also promises the ideal remedy: a “luxe risotto” recipe! Yes, really.
