Carmen Dell’Orefice may fill our head with forlorn dreams of cheekbones that cut glass at age 82, but we don’t resent her for it. In fact, will take any glimmer of hope we can get that haute couture might lie in our future 60 years down the road. We’ll also take as much Carmen as we can get, and her latest cover and spread for YOU Magazine, is providing us with some serious encouragement to stick to our anti-aging routine.
If you can forget about her striking countenance even for second, the interview Carmen gives You brings even more good news for those of us hoping to be chic and self-assured in our twilight years. As is the case with many young models, Carmen says she often struggle with an identity crisis. “Being on the cover of Vogue at 15 meant nothing to me,” she even admitted.
“It took me half my life to understand who I was. How could I be true to anything when I didn’t know myself? I am able to be truer and truer with myself the older I get, but I am still a work in progress. You don’t have to like me, but I’m not going to please someone for the sake of their approval.”
Sure that be-yourself mantra is easier said than done, but we’ve filed Carmen under “role models” long ago and will try to commit everything she says to memory. Sadly when it comes to beauty secrets, the storied supermodel might have us resorting to the black market:
The treatment I had [to eliminate sun damage] is not available to the public any more. It wasn’t a peel; it wasn’t a lift. The doctor used the finest wire brush, and he planed off my skin. It brings you right down to baby skin, and those layers of skin never grow back so you have to be so careful in daylight. I go to sleep with sunblock on, in case I forget to put it on in the morning.
However, her trick for keeping skin dewy and fresh is totally within reach:
I moisturise my skin with anything that comes to hand, but nothing on the outside is going to make a blind bit of difference unless you take care of the inside. I drink water with lemon juice in the morning, and eat plenty of probiotic yoghurt
Now if only we could only find someone like Diana Vreeland to be our personal confidante:
Diana Vreeland [the late legendary Harper’s Bazaar fashion editor] was a good friend and a great champion. She knew everything about my life and respected the way I conducted it. Once when I was called into her office, she stood behind me and said: ‘I want you to do this collection in Paris with [Richard] Avedon, but you have to grow your neck.’ She told me to think tall and stretch my neck, and she’d see me next week – if my neck was longer, I’d go to Paris. And I did.
Carmen talks more at length about life, love, beauty, and fashion here, but before you let her impart more pearls of wisdom, click through the entire spread below and watch the accompanying video. And be sure to have your SPF 70 sunblock at the ready, because you’ll soon realize that anyone who wants to look half as good when they’re pushing 85 has a long road ahead.
