Carrie Brownstein is about to ace yet another medium. She’ll star as Genevieve Cantrell in Todd Haynes’ lesbian drama Carol. Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara will co-star in the film, which is based off the book The Price of Salt, by Patricia Highsmith.
In the ’50s-set story, department saleswoman Therese (Mara) falls in love with Carol (Blanchett) and nabs her address to deliver some PG toys. It starts out as a friendship, and Therese’s dating a guy, but she’s not interested in bedroom times with him. She and Brownstein’s character will have an “encounter,” which sounds like more than splitting a milkshake. It should be a spicier change of pace from separate beds and pickling stuff on Portlandia, although she did get to pretend to date Chloe Sevigny.
There aren’t too many details available yet, but odds are Haynes will do the lesbian lit some justice, because Blanchett was the best damn Bob Dylan of the lot in I’m Not There. So think like, Brokeback Mountain with Bergdorf Goodman shopping events instead of farm work.
