Cartman Couture? South Park Inspires Castelbajac Collection

In fashion, they say inspiration can come from just about anywhere — Japanese horror flicks transform into webby knits and locker room wear becomes a corseted sweatshirt. But Eric Cartman? Not exactly our idea of a muse.

Perhaps French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac sees something in South Park‘s trash-talking-toons that we don’t, because word is he’s planning to base an entire collection around the controversial Comedy Central cast.

“I discovered South Park and Nirvana at the same time.” explains Castelbajac of his new collection, Holly Boys and Naughty Girls. “I would mute my TV to play “Smells Like Teen Spirit” loud. The fusion of the two made perfect sense to me.”

Of course, he’s not the first to be drawn to anime– see: Jeremy Scott’s bed-rockin’ Flintstones-inspired range — though being the linear thinkers we are, we’re having a tough time envisioning Kenny and company inspiring anything besides a few FCC fines and well, death threats. We’re envisioning a lot of orange, ear-flaps and knit-wear. But ever idiosyncratic, Castelbajac contends it’s all about rock and roll irreverence, colorful brutality and of course the fact that Nickelodeon Consumer Products International is funding the endeavor.

“South Park resonates with young people who do not want to be part of the mainstream crowd, and these are just the type of shoppers who appreciate Jean-Charles de Castelbajac,” said Nickelodeon VP, Jean-Philippe Randisi. Sounds like a match made in heaven — or wherever. Wouldn’t want to upset anyone now, would we?
