It’s not exactly the ’70s, but celebrities have gotten way more candid about their grooming, or lack there of, when it comes to their private parts. While the women who just come right out and say it, or show us (we’re looking at you, Lady Gaga), are few and far between, it’s an indication that pubic hair is far less outré these days.
Perhaps this is why some 51 per cent of women do not style or groom their pubic hair according to a survey by UKMedix. Furthermore, around 62 per cent say that their partner prefers the natural look.
Razors and waxing salons have yet to go extinct, but we’re definitely observing a trend. Here are 5 of the most notorious celebrity women who went on record about their desire to go au naurale — or at least feign it.
1. Cameron Diaz
“Women undergoing laser hair removal on all of their lady bits,” Cameron wrote in her new self-help bible, The Body Book. “Personally, I think permanent laser hair removal sounds like a crazy idea.”
She continues to back her statement with some very wise fruit for thought. “Also, let’s be honest: just like every other part of your body, your labia major is not immune to gravity. Do you really want a hairless vagina for the rest of your life?” she posed.
Diaz didn’t always have this outlook on grooming. During a 2012 interview with Graham Norton, she revealed that she has a girlfriend who is obsessed with having a 70s bush. “I mean she is obsessed with it,” she explained. “And when she takes a bath it literally sways like seaweed. I swear.”
“All of my girlfriends were like, “Would you please please please just trim it, please, I can’t take it anymore.” And now, for the mystery friends big reveal…
2. Gwyneth Paltrow
During an interview in May, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she was that friend. “Every time I have a bikini wax, Cameron Diaz holds me down,” she revealed. We might be counting down the seconds to the alleged Vanity Fair take-down piece on Paltrow, but we still have to say, respect.
3. Lady Gaga
Just last month, Candy, “the first transversal style magazine,” boasted Lady Gaga on the cover of its winter issue going full frontal with her pubic hair on full display. Earlier in the year, she allegedly made the following requests for her dressing room: white leather couches, black satin drapes, fresh roses and a “manquin with puffy pink public hair.”
4. Kate Winslet
Okay, so Winslet isn’t exactly pro-pubic hair, but she went on record saying that going bare has proved a career challenge from time to time. “I had to grow the hair down there,” she told Allure in 2009. “But because of years of waxing, as all of us girls know, it doesn’t come back quite the way it used to.” In order to compensate for nude scenes, Winslet wore a merkin for her Oscar-winning role in The Reader.
5. Solange Knowles
Back in 2010, Solange tweeted the following:
