Tell your boyfriends to watch their wardrobes: The second class of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s fashion incubator program aren’t all designing cocktail frocks and chic gowns. For the most part, this class is concerned with bringing menswear up to snuff. And as they were hand selected by the CFDA, we have no choice but to believe that American fashion establishment is taking some time to focus on the guys.
The new members make up ten aspiring and relatively new companies. Of those ten, five are menswear brands. There are two lingerie companies, one handbag line, a jeweler and a sole women’s designer in this year’s group as well.
Women’s Wear Daily reports that the class includes Luis Fernandez of Number:Lab, Ricky Hendry and Marc Daniels of Isaora, Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein of Timo Weiland, Benjamin and Doug Burkman of Burkman Brothers and Antonio Azzuolo, who are all makers of forward-thinking men’s clothing (though to be fair we should mention that Weiland and Eckstein also design a women’s collection). Arielle Shapiro of Ari Dein and Maayan Zilberman and Nikki Dekker of The Lake & Stars make women’s lingerie and swimwear, while Emanuela Duca‘s jewelry and Reece Solomon‘s leather goods (sold under the label Reece Hudson) will make sure that the class will have plenty of accessories. Only Christian Cota is focused exclusively on dressing the ladies.
It’s an interesting shift when you consider how many members of the last class were womenswear designers. Of the 12 companies in the class, which includes Prabal Gurung and Bibhu Mohapatra, seven designed women’s clothing.
Maybe the CFDA is trying to be an equal opportunity promoter, or maybe they’re just tired of seeing guys dressed like schlubs. But whatever the case, they’re betting on these ten businesses as heralding the future of American fashion. Check out what you (or your brothers) will be wearing in a few years, below.
