In one of our favorite collaborations in a collab-heavy year, the CFDA has teamed up with the New York Times to bring 50 amazing photos out of the Gray Lady’s archive.
Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Prabal Gurung, Zac Posen, and Michelle Smith each chose 10 images from the newspaper’s prolific history to go up for sale on the New York Times‘ website. Last night we got a preview of 50 Photographs at Bloomingdale’s, where we spoke to Milly‘s Smith about her involvement with the project.
“I chose very bold, emotional photographs that appealed to me,” she explained. “It was daunting in the beginning because there were thousands and thousands and thousands of images to go through, but the great ones that spoke to me really popped out. I started limiting the search. I started with New York and fashion, but I ended up not really choosing fashion images. Some are New York themed, but a lot are textural.”
Indeed texture is a running theme throughout the collection, though quite a few fashion photos are included, too — Wang even chose a photo from one of her own runway shows. Some of the best images include the Hubble telescope shots picked by Posen and the taxi cab photo chosen by DVF.
But the designers go to the Times for more than just pretty pictures. “I read the New York Times, of course!” said Smith. “Every morning, every morning. I sneak in the Post, too — Page Six, I have to admit. But the Gray Lady is near and dear to my heart. My husband reads it online, but I have to hold the paper in my hand. I’m old-fashioned like that.”
