We heard rumors last week that Christopher Kane was in negotiations with Balenciaga to replace head desginer Nicolas Ghesquière, but now it’s been confirmed that he will in fact not be taking the reins at the storied house.
The announcement of Ghesquière’s departure was abrupt and unexpected, prompting the rumor mill to start churning out guesses about who would step into the position. The internet has been abuzz lately with evidence from anonymous sources saying that the Scottish designer was ready to make the move, following a story published by French newsweekly Le Nouvel Observateur (falsely) confirming that Kane had joined Balenciaga. WWD reported today that none of those speculations had any basis in truth. A spokesperson for Kane said,
“Rumors surrounding Christopher Kane’s appointment as creative director of Balenciaga are unfounded.”
We have to say that we’re a bit surprised. And with Ghesquière officially making his exit on November 30, time is running out for the house to name a successor. They are working off a “shortlist” of potential candidates, says WWD, and they’ve said before that negotiations are well underway, so an official announcement should come soon.
