There’s nothing we like more than fashion that nods to history, but the unfortunately named “Belsen Was A Gas Military Parka” from the twisted minds at British clothing label Evil Twin takes that idea a step too far. The parka is named after a sardonic, shocking Sex Pistols song about the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northwestern Germany, where some 50,000 inmates (including Anne Frank) died during World War II.
Other than its wildly offensive name, the coat is a standard parka, with a few embellishments. The olive drab fabric is accented with a black-and-red plaid lining, and it even has trendy studded epaulets. It looks like it would keep you pretty warm — if it weren’t for the cold reception you’d get once people learned what inspired it.
The song, which lead singer John Lydon claimed to have written, was as shocking when it was debuted in the late 70s as it is now. Lydon said in an interview later that the song was a “very nasty, silly little thing… that should’ve ended up on the cutting room floor.” But it didn’t, and now we have a coat named after it. But hey, it is on sale.
We reached out to Evil Twin’s US press rep for a comment, but we haven’t heard back. Take a look at the parka, and, if you can stomach them, listen to the song’s lyrics, below.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
