Renn’s mother, worried her daughter wasn’t girly enough (she was a star karate student), put her in beauty school after moving to Mississippi. A scout was at the modeling school one day, took one look at her, and instantly recognized Renn’s potential. “You are going to be a supermodel,” he told her; but only if she lost 9 inches off of her hips. He pulled out an issue of Vogue featuring Gisele to give her thin-spiration.
And lose 9 inches she did; and then some. Like many young models eager for success, Renn spiraled into a dangerous life of eating disorders, unaware that things like plus-size modeling even existed. Her career now is not marked by her weight, but by her modeling abilities and the numerous editorial and advertising campaigns she appears in.
So what’s next for Crystal Renn?
“If I could design a line, if I could style for shoots, whatever it is, that’s something that I really enjoy,” she told Modelinia. “I love doing editorial. It’s somethign that’s my passion. It’s kind of an outlet for me, to be able to show so many different sides of my personality.”
