This Is Why Fashion Freebies Are Kept Behind Closed Doors

Fashion and freebies go hand in hand – you should see how many questionable fragrances we get to pawn off to our younger siblings – except ooops, we did NOT just say that, because when you start getting braggy, things can get downright embarrassing.

Take, for instance, Daily Front Row’s inaugural ‘Fire Island Share House Tales’ column. You won’t find it on their website, because it was quietly pulled down after public and industry backlash revealed that people were not so much excited and amused as they were totally and understandably outraged.

The column’s premise? Budding young publicist Corey Tuttle goes to Fire Island with his industry buddies – including publicists and marketing managers for brands Calvin Klein, Gant and Nike, a fashion associate at Vanity Fair and a sittings assistant at GQ – for a #YOLO weekend of, in their words, “sponsor swag, fashion trends, the scene at infamous local hot spot Tea…and, of course, twerking.” For the first column they were hooked up with everything from booze to Lady Gaga toothbrushes (and probably tote bags and USB sticks) from companies including Ciroc and Red Bull.

So Condé’s shacking up with the love child of Big Brother and Survivor. What could possibly go wrong?

Well for starters, Vanity Fair and GQ have strict rules in place about free swag. After the post was ridiculed on the Daily website, a Condé spokesperson told Racked that the publisher “has long-standing policies in place that ensure editorial integrity. We take this matter seriously and are looking into the situation.” Next thing you know, “Sorry, we couldn’t find what you were looking for.”

The website’s editor in chief, Brandusa Niro, has declined to comment.

But on the internet nothing is ever really deleted, and the embarrassment survives through Tuttle’s hashtag #MisterMansion. Do with that information what you will, then join us in hoping they’re not planning to pawn off any of the leftovers for cash.
