It was only a matter of time before the changes began rolling out at W magazine. After newly appointed editor in chief Stefano Tonchi made comments bout changing the very essence of the publication, some shuffling of the masthead was bound to happen.
On Wednesday, WWD announced that Dennis Freedman, W’s creative director for nearly twenty years, would be leaving the magazine. Freedman
“I have had the most extraordinary experience working with some of the most talented and brilliant photographers, artists and editors in the world, and these collaborations have brought me unbelievable joy and satisfaction. For me, this has been one of the greatest opportunities I could ever hope for.”
WWD also expects an exit from senior contributing fashion editor Camilla Nickerson, who is rumored to be returning to Vogue after having left in 2005.
So what will become of W’s masthead? Only time will tell. Neither Freedman nor WWD have made any statements as to his next move, or what other changes are in store at W. But to those of us who found Dennis Freedman’s creative direction thoughtful and unique; to those who attribute him with the creation of what W has been for nearly twenty years, we mourn this loss on W’s masthead.
