DKNY To Fête Legendary Soho Mural With An International Campaign

DKNY may be an iconic New York brand, but for the launch of its new #DKNYArtworks campaign, it is tapping a slew of British stars — Cara Delevingne (a brand favorite), Rita Ora, and Iggy Azalea — to celebrate at an event in London. While we’re a little perplexed as to why the fête won’t be here in NYC, this is a party we’d certainly want to crash. After all, the campaign is an homage to the famous DKNY Soho mural which, had it not been demolished in 2008, would be just around the corner from us on Houston Street.

Since many have asked what happened to the famed logo, and expressed sadness about its absence, DKNY wanted to start a project to help revive it. The #DKNYArtworks installation connects DKNY with NYC using the work of 10 artists, from 10 cities around the world — New York, London, Milan, Paris, Dubai, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo — who will each come up with their own take on their legendary logo. You can expect to see the remixed artworks on billboards and kiosks, which have begun to appear in a few cities as of this weekend.

“We loved collaborating with individual artists that reflected their city while being inspired by ours,” Donna Karan explained to WWD. “It’s like a worldwide street art fair — connecting the dots of art, style and community.”

For more information on the individual artists, DKNYArtworks.com has launched with profiles, inspirations, and behind-the-scenes videos about them all. The site will also feature an interview with Peter Arnell, the visionary behind the original wall, who will tell its story from beginning to end. And of course, since this is DKNY we’re talking about, you can bet there will be a large social media presence with Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr entries tagged #DKNYArtworks.

While we’re sad we won’t be able to make the celebratory bash, which will be ’90s themed to honor the glory days when DKNY’s wall was originally erected, we look forward to seeing the images splashed all over NYC — including landmarks such as Yankee Stadium, Times Square, and, of course, the DKNY Madison Avenue Flagship.
