If it seems like every time you turn around another designer is shacking up with a big retailer for a must-have diffusion collection, it’s because that is indeed the case. Macy’s alone has rolled out four collaborations in a matter of eight months, and they just announced a fifth set to launch in February.
The latest Macy’s Impulse designer is none other than Michelle Obama favorite Doo-Ri Chung. The First Lady looked stunning in a custom plum jersey gown (with cool turquoise crystal belt!) by the Korean-American designer at last week’s South Korean state dinner. This has been an exciting few days for Chung! Her Macy’s collection drops Feb. 15, and it will be sold for eight weeks both online and in Macy’s stores.
We’re fans of Chung and her brand doo.ri, and her sketches for Impulse seem in keeping with her designs. As Chung told WWD: “The customer is very different from whom we’ve catered to before, but I really didn’t have to adapt. Macy’s wanted to keep the design level high. I didn’t feel the challenge was very different.” Well, sure, that’s what they all say. But we have high hopes!
With pieces ranging from $39 to $159, the collection will involve mini-dresses, maxi-dresses, tops, leggings, and trenchcoats. Expect lots of Chung’s signature touches — draping, art-inspired prints, detailed knitwear — as well as tons of jersey (like Michelle’s dress!).
