Call us old school, but candy is just candy, right? Well, not to Dylan Lauren. Following in the footsteps of her pop Ralph, Dylan is trying to elevate her company, Dylan’s Candy Bar, to an “aspirational” status through collaborations — the first being a bag line with LeSportsac.
For the collaboration, 14 LeSportsac bag styles will be produced in three different candy prints (see one particular piece above). All the bags will come with a gum-ball charm, naturally, and will be priced from $18 to $188. The bags will launch in August, and again in November, in freestanding LeSportsac stores and online at LeSportsac and Dylan’s Candy Bar.
While we may all roll our eyes at the collaboration, the deal is actually quite a smart move. WWD points out that LeSportsac is owned by Japan’s Itochu Corp., which has a big distribution in Asia. The brand itself is also “very accessible but considered fashionable around the world”, Dylan said. We’ll totally attest to that — we bought several brightly colored and boldly printed bags back in the day, and even Anna Wintour herself is reportedly a major fan of the brand’s wares.
Anyway, we might not buy into Dylan’s new bag (mostly because we want to eat candy, not wear it), but it’s certainly interesting to see how she’ll angle her brand into a lifestyle company à la Ralph. In the meantime, check out a previous Project Runway challenge featuring Dylan’s Candy Bar:
