It’s not just that Taylor had an abundance of baubles, her jewelry collection is renowned for its quality. Taylor herself was known for being a bit of an expert, being able to evaluate quality and provenance on the spot. Many of her pieces had sentimental value, including her famed 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond and 33-carat Krupp diamond (also purchased by husband Richard Burton). She received jewelry from the many men in her life, but also from movie studios and other industry folk looking to please her.
And no matter how ill she ever fell, you can be sure she was donning at least one sparkly piece. Recalls friend and jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz: “She was like, ‘I don’t feel good, my hair is dirty but I’m wearing my bracelet.’ I mean, fabulous.” Fabulous, indeed.
Christie’s has yet to confirm the sale, but we expect it will occur some time later this year. For context, Yves Saint Laurent‘s art collection was auctioned off in February of 2009, eight months after his death the previous June.
