Chanel Hula Hoop Bag Looks As Awkward As Expected On ELLE

We have yet to see someone parading down Prince Street with the much buzzed-about Chanel hula hoop bag, but the infamous design has landed its second magazine cover, slung over the shoulder of Isabel Scholten on the summer issue of ELLE Netherlands.

We’d still do some sinful things to have the surplus of Chanel quilted leather, but we can’t help but think that the ‘bag’ looks a little too off the runway (or on it, for that matter). Something about prancing around the beach with this gargantuan hoop just to hide your SPF and shades feels a tad unnatural.

While the bag still looked cumbersome on its previous Vogue Japan July 2013 cover, we appreciate the editorial direction on Anna Dello Russo’s part. Bette Frank looks like a retro wonder straight out of the experimental swinging sixties. For some reason, a hula hoop bag makes more sense to us then.

Do you think this style can transcend cover art and manage a bit of mass appeal?
