Cellphones Turn 40, But Not Without Leaving A Mark On The Industry

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the first-ever mobile phone conversation, and boy, have we come a looong way since 1973. So to celebrate, we’re taking a look back at recent fashion moments that would have gone unnoticed were it not for the invention of the cellphone.

Back in the ’70s, celly cells were pretty much bricks with the battery life of 20 minutes. But modern technology (and our unfathomable addictions to connectedness) has turned the once-simple device into an essential product that does much, much more than just make calls.

While old school editors like Grace Coddington may shy away from modern technology, Naomi Campbell has used the cell as a weapon, John Galliano‘s career was shattered after video surfaced from his epically racist rant, and proof came out that fashion houses don’t spend enough money on events. We’ve got the cellphone to thank for all that and more.
