Vogue Italia has something of a spotty history when it comes to dealing with race in its pages. On the one hand, its “All Black Issue” created huge buzz for the models involved and produced some truly stunning images, while on the other, it has been known to publish tone-deaf pieces like this one on the origins of “rapper style” and this one featuring the infamous “slave earrings.”
For their January issue, however, the glossy has tapped Chinese model Fei Fei Sun, and after leafing through our mental archive of Vogue covers and consulting the trusty Google machine, we’re pretty darn sure this is the first time an Asian model has ever fronted the magazine all by her lonesome. And the resulting images? Flawless.
Fei Fei channels the legendary Sixties model China Machado in the Steven Meisel-lensed shoot. On the cover her perfectly-coiffed do and retro winged eyeliner set off a look from Chanel‘s spring 2013 collection, and in the accompanying behind-the-scenes video we get a peek at Lori Goldstein‘s spot-on styling. Looks from Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, and Ralph Lauren also make an appearance, along with a slick beehive and some killer jewels.

this is some kind of spaceship or something.
