Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani was just named a Fashion 4 Development goodwill ambassador to the United Nations, which means she will participate in a roundtable discussion at the U.N. headquarters Thursday. Fancy!
Fashion 4 Development was founded two years ago as a program that encourages the industry’s heavy hitters to work on sustainable development initiatives. Its goals are “to increase economic levels, decrease poverty and hunger, and help empower women in these countries,” cofounder and global chair Evie Evangelou told WWD. Sozzani recently showed an interest in developing countries by running an Africa-themed issue of L’Uomo Vogue.
And this is not the first cause that Sozzani has championed. She also spoke out against the fashion industry’s pro-eating disorder practices in a talk at Harvard University in April. However, this will be the first time the fashion industry and the U.N. have formally teamed up.
