Earlier last month, Macy’s revealed that it was collaborating with Calvin Klein‘s Francisco Costa as part of its “A Magical Journey to Brazil” series. We previewed the Brazilian designer’s entire collection this morning and can attest that it’s amazing. The quality and structure fooled us into thinking that the dresses were more expensive than the reported $135-$180 range. Don’t worry, that’s not the case.
We also chatted with the designer about the collab, and what it was like dressing Emily Blunt for Monday night’s Met Gala.
Tell us about your inspiration for this collection.
Brazil’s architectural elements inspired me, and there’s a very basic-ness to the clothes. There’s a very genuine Brazilian spirit, like easy clothes that could be worn with flats and worn in the evening, office, and weekends. They’re very versatile. There’s two fabrics — jersey and vicose crepe. The jerseys are very easy to wear. The satin-backed crepe is really, really expensive. If you feel it, it feels luxurious, doesn’t it? It’s really lovely, feel the weight of this!
Then there’s the little details, like the belt. It’s a little piece of metal. It’s such a lovely, simple solution. And it’s elastic, so it’s versatile.
That’s the whole thing about being at Macy’s. You bring good design to different customers. I think that we underestimate the customer sometimes. They’re sophisticated and they want to see more products like these. Great designs at great prices. And here, it happens to be a very good combination of those things. You’re getting an amazing price and you’re getting designer quality and design. What’s not to like about that? We’re very excited and it’s a very cool collaboration.
How did the Met Gala go for you?
It was great. It’s such a fun, celebratory evening. It was so cool. The red carpet is always great, but I mean, the exhibition was really cool too. It was interesting, I thought it was great. Schiaparelli, Prada — there’s definitely a strength in both worlds. It was fun seeing those pieces, which I had never seen before. It was genius.
What was it like dressing Emily Blunt for the event?
It wasn’t the first time we dressed her. We really have a relationship with her, and she’s lovely. She’s so great and gorgeous, so it’s just really easy. Her dress was very sexy and I wanted to keep her sportiness, so we kept the look bare and bathing suit-like.

this is some kind of spaceship or something.
