When we decided to round-up Miley Cyrus’ best and worst covers, we thought the latter would outnumber the former. Little did we know, the twerk star has a penchant for re-imagining classics songs in impressive fashion. In fact, some of her latest stunts have us questioning our belief that a BANGERZ tour ticket is a profound waste of money.
Whatever your feelings are on the pop-star-gone-rogue, we promise that these seven covers will leave you impressed, bemused, or at the very least, thoroughly entertained.
1. BEST: “Jolene” by Dolly Parton
During the summer of 2012, Miley was in her element covering Dolly Parton’s 1973 classic with her band as part of The Backyard Sessions. Her version was so good it had critics wondering if it was better than Jack White’s rendering. In a hushed voice, we concur.
2. BEST: “Hey Ya” by Outkast
Over the weekend, Milez took on a song very near and dear to our hearts. As much as we wanted to hate it, we couldn’t deny that her slowed-down, country take on the 2003 hit was clever. However, she did lose us at, “Hey Fellas.”
3. WORST: “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” by The Flaming Lips
It was only a matter of time before Miley and Wayne Coyne performed together on stage, and while it wasn’t quite as hard to stomach as we feared, we’d prefer it didn’t happen at all. No more on-stage banter, please!
4. BEST: “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey’s
Back in November, Miley hit BBC Radio 1’s live lounge and added some country twang to one of our favorite songs of summer 2013 — and we didn’t hate it. In fact, it was more proof that Cyrus is at her best stripped-down (ahem, acoustically speaking), sans smoke and mirrors. Lines like, “Real big, beauty queen style,” resonate well.
5. BEST: “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High” by Arctic Monkeys
We were hankering for a female cover of Arctic Monkeys’ latest hit ever since we first heard it. We wouldn’t have chosen Miley for the job, but we were stunned by how much her country tenor suited the number.
6. WORST: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana
7. BEST: “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” by Miley Cyrus featuring Johnzo West
It’s sessions like this that make us wish Miley had never learned to twerk. This cover, off of the Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International tribute album, is simply beautiful.
