At least one company is managing to profit from the University of Iowa’s decision to decline HBO’s request to film Girls on campus. Raygun LLC, a t-shirt company based in Des Moines, Iowa, is commemorating the monumental refusal with a humorous shirt.
Lena Dunham, who plays the Iowa Writers’ Workshop acceptee known as Hannah Horvath, has her imaged sketched on the tee inside a circle with a line through it. The caption reads: “Iowa City: No “Girls” Allowed!”
The UI vice president of strategic communications, Joe Brennan, said the refusal was based on potential filming disruptions as well as the university and community being cast in a unfavorable light.
The shirt seems calls out perceived hypocrisy by referencing Samantha Goudie, a University of Iowa student known as “Vodka Samm.” Goudie famously tweeted her 0.341 blood-alcohol level following a drunken incident at a football game.
“Vodka Samm’s cool but not naked Lena?!” the shirt says in small letters next to Dunham’s mouth.
