Dame Helen Mirren is a shining beacon of hope for young starlets who worry about what the passing years will to do to their careers, and in the narrow parameters of the film industry’s beauty ideal, to their physical appeal. The 67 year old Oscar-winner continues to land hard-hitting roles in Hollywood that garner her critical claim, like her turn in 2011’s The Debt as an Israeli Nazi hunter with unfinished business, and as the wife of the notoriously dark director in the 2012 Hitchcock biopic. Plus, she’s a trailblazer on the red carpet, completely defying the idea that women of a certain age need to button up their sweater sets in order to look appropriate.
But while we definitely wouldn’t call the star’s sartorial sensibilities timid, we also wouldn’t describe them as particulary whimsical — until now. Mirren showed up at the BAFTA Awards tonight, having been nominated for her aforementioned turn as Alma Reville, sporting a shimmery cotton candy pink hairdo. Paired with an embroidered silk long-sleeved Nicholas Oakwell gown with an enviably swirly skirt, the new coiffure is definitely raising some eyebrows.
“I saw it on America’s Next Top Model, so I decided to give it a go,” she told People simply.
We may not recommend it for every one of her majesty’s dames, but Mirren definitely pulls it off with aplomb. And any sixty-something who beat out Pippa Middleton for the title “Best Body of the Year” in 2011 should probably be allowed to do whatever the heck she wants. Helen clearly knows best.
