After the monstrosity that was Lifetime’s Liz and Dick, we were very open to having the film industry take another shot at capturing the grand relationship of one of Hollywood’s most legendary couples, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Although, when we first got word that Helena Bonham Carter would be portraying Taylor, we had a hard time picturing her as the beguiling, over-the-top glam addict with a penchant for diamonds. She was, after all, the the perfect Bellatrix Lestrange. However, in the first image released from BBC America’s TV film Burton and Taylor, Carter proves that she is ever the chameleon — with the thick brows, beauty mark, and violet eyes to prove it.
The biopic will hone in on the couple’s relationship during their run on Broadway for the play Private Lives in 1983, a year before Burton died. In the show, they play a divorced couple who runs into each other in France while honeymooning with new spouses. Off stage, the couple had already been divorced twice. Ooh, drama!
Burton and Taylor will premiere this fall on BBC America and while we wait with bated breath, we find it necessary to dwell on the fact that we live in a world in which Carter and Lindsay Lohan have both portrayed the same character
