When we saw this news alert, our immediate reaction was that it read like an April Fools’ joke. The notoriously challenging Margiela getting its H&M on? No way. But alas…maybe way?
All of H&M’s past collabs have been with decidedly more commercial bedfellows — Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, Stella McCartney. Even Lanvin and Marni have more commercial cache than Margiela. This pairing is probably best aligned with H&M’s 2008 Comme des Garçons collaboration, but even that was a different animal. While CDG sells some crazypants stuff, it also sells streetwear. Conversely, Margiela is all avant garde everything. Split-toe shoes! Plastic fur coats! The stuff is totally awesome and fairly bonkers!
There are probably two people who helped make this H&M x Margiela thing happen, and those two people just happen to be Styleite faves: Michelle Obama and Kanye West. Michelle has been known to rock (not totally insane) Margiela, while Kanye helped the brand enter the luxury rap lexicon (and thus mainstream consciousness) via Watch the Throne.
It sounds like this alleged collection could hit stores around Christmas, just a couple months after Anna Dello Russo‘s accessories for the brand debut. Keep you posted, folks!
