Alana Thompson — who you probably know as “Honey Boo Boo Child” — is getting her own TV show.
Okay, is TLC trolling us?! Alana is easily one of the more disturbing Toddlers & Tiaras cast members. WTF go-go juice. WTF her mom. WTF all of it. According to Us Weekly, a six episode spinoff, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, will begin airing in September. A statement form the network explains:
“When she’s not chasing after crowns, Alana’s with her family in rural Georgia doing what her family does best: four-wheeling through mud pits and picking up road kill for the family cookout.”
We get it: Alana is good for ratings. But she is also six years old, and this feels exceptionally exploitative. Reality TV has long been the measure of the country’s lowest common denominator. Jersey Shore may feed our morbid curiosity, but the cast members are also of age. They are aware of their participation.
Shows like Toddlers & Tiaras are controversial for a reason: the stars are (really young) kids. Giving Alana her own spinoff proves TLC — and the bigger reality TV industry — has reached the pinnacle of ickiness. No thank you, we won’t be watching.
