Male Supermodels Make Way Less Than Their Female Counterparts

Today, Forbes published a piece on male models that has us asking, “How much dough would the Derek Zoolander be making if he were real?” What might come as a surprise to many is that being “professionally good looking,” as Forbes points out, is nowhere near as profitable if you’re a man.

While we always knew this to be true, we were very shocked by how large the margin really is. The overarching disparity is best seen when stacking up the highest ranking supermodels of each sex and comparing their annual earnings. Well, Gisele Bündchen raked in $42 million last year, while poor ol’ Sean O’Pry only made $1.5 million despite starring in campaigns for Versace, Giorgio Armani, H&M, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Mugatu (we kid). These numbers were tallied based on licensing ventures, runways shows, commercial catalogs, spokesperson gigs, and fashion/fragrance contracts.

But don’t be fooled into thinking this only applies to A-list stardom, as the same applies to human mannequins on all levels of the totem pole. According to, female models, with an average salary of $41,300, earn 148% more than male models. Forbes attributes this to the fact that for men, attaining and keeping supermodel status is larger feat when you can’t book large-scale gigs such as major cosmetic campaigns or the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

While the modeling industry is one of few that’s actually female-dominated, we firmly believe in equal pay for all, no matter what line of work — and that holds true for the Zoolanders of the world, too.
