So, we’re clearly not the only people who are completely obsessed with Iris Apfel. The 90-year-old style icon is simply the coolest. We intend to buy all of her HSN jewelry (and everything in her Alexis Bittar collection), and wear it while watching a new documentary about her.
Albert Maysles is the filmmaker behind the upcoming Apfel film, and we anticipate it will be just as delightful as the last fashion documentary we saw (and she appeared in), Bill Cunningham New York. The New York Times spoke to Apfel about the project and much more, and we love what she has to say about her popularity (“I’m a geriatric starlet, my dear, don’t you know. All of a sudden, I’m hot; I’m cool; I have a ‘fan base’.”) and her signature glasses (“They are standard equipment; they come with me.”).
We also love the bit Costume Institute curator Harold Koda says about Apfel’s singular style (“Don’t try this at home.”). And did you know straight men love her? BECAUSE THEY DO (“They are so much more romantic than women.”). Iris, you’re the bestbestbest. We’ll be first in line to watch your documentary, and we promise to see it multiple times. Pinky swear.
