The 90-year-old icon was inspired by her own wardrobe and created a collection of handbags that feature Mongolian lamb, hair calf, and snakeskin. There are 12 styles available in five colors, and prices range from $228 to $398.
As per WWD, the collection has a funny backstory. Here’s how it went down between Apfel and business partner Lisa Nunziata:
“When I met Iris, I told her I’m the last of a dying breed, and she shot back, ‘If you’re the end of a dying breed, then I must be extinct,’” Nunziata said.
Based on that exchange, the two came up with the collection’s name, Extinctions.
While the name alone delighted Apfel to no end, the duo wanted to drive home its double meaning by selecting evocative hangtags for the bags. At first, they looked into the image of a dinosaur, but it was “unsightly,” Apfel said, so they settled on a dodo bird.
The two are also planning a resort and spring collection for next year. Apfel is designing all day, every day, y’all. Check out two of the handbag styles below!
