HSN Removes Iris Apfel’s Disputed Toucan Pin From Collection

We were all but heartbroken when we were alerted to the fact that one of the pieces from Iris Apfel‘s upcoming HSN collection bore a striking resemblance to that of a French jewelry designer. Now the disputed toucan pin is being removed from the collection.

HSN explained in a statement:

Iris Apfel’s collection for HSN is intended to share her interpretations of some of her vintage jewelry pieces. Mrs. Apfel explained to HSN that, like many of her pieces, she purchased her toucan brooch from a flea market and believed it was a vintage piece. As we have discovered that this is not a vintage piece, the brooch will be removed from the collection.

Copying vintage pieces is not a new practice, and Apfel previously stated the line would draw on her own impressive collection. “I have amassed an enormous collection of bags, belts, bangles and beads without which I would be lost,” she told WWD earlier this year. And as far as her not remembering and/or realizing the piece was not in fact vintage, this we can understand. Yes, this is a thing that can happen when you have collected as many accessories as she has over the past 89 years.
