Isabel Marant’s Ideal Woman Is Serge Gainsbourg

If we were the type of website that ran a regular quote of the day, we have no doubt that Isabel Marant would be featured in it regularly. The French designer, who describes herself as “anti-consumerist” and says she hates fashion (we know, we know — we’re throwing around some serious oxymorons, but bear with us for just a second) enjoys a pretty steady following. And for someone who really, really dislikes the industry, she makes some beautiful jewelry and some beautiful clothes.

But it’s what she said to Love magazine that got our attention. In the fourth installment of the oft-controversial, always amazing fashion magazine, Marant says that her favorite woman was not a woman at all.

“I hate famous women,” Marant says. “My ideal woman is Serge Gainsbourg, not that he was a woman.”

For the unitiated, Serge Gainsbourg was a French singer, songwriter, actor and director. And no, he was not a woman.

We would say that this is the sort of thing that we expect from Marant, but we don’t really know her well enough to know what to expect will happen when she opens her mouth. So we’ll just say this: Isabel Marant’s clothes and accessories might be flawless, and we might be a stone’s throw away from her New York flagship store at the moment. But we’d much rather trek down into the Meatpacking District and drop a ton of money at Diane von Furstenberg because we know she’d probably actually appreciate it.

Talent and skill will take you pretty far in fashion. But after a while, you’re going to have to start liking what you do and the people you do it for if you want to keep your shops open.
