Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas, and for the past two weeks the fallen president, as well as wife Jackie Kennedy, have had the spotlight cast on them.
From the story behind Jackie O’s infamous pink suit, to her and JFK’s alleged tryst 30,000 ft. in the air, it’s proved to be a revealing time for the illusive First Lady.
Here, we’ve narrowed down the 5 most interesting things we’ve discovered about the icon.
1. Her Suit Was a Chanel Knock-Off
It was an exact copy of a carnation pink Chanel suit, made with Chanel fabric, but had been made in the U.S. for political reasons. Jackie had worn it at least six times prior to the assassination.
2. She Wore the Pink Suit As Lyndon B. Johnson was Sworn In
Although the suit was splattered with blood, Jackie insisted on wearing it as a message to the nation. “I want them to see what they have done to Jack,” she said.
3. She and JFK Joined the Mile-High Club the Day Before His Death
According to historian William Manchester, Jackie and JFK had sex on Air Force One the day before he was assassinated.
4. She Didn’t Break the News of the Tragedy to Her Children
The day after the assassination, Jackie insisted on telling her children of their father’s death herself, but her mother Janet Auchincloss thought she’d had enough to deal with. The Kennedys’ British nanny hesitantly agreed to do so. “Your father has gone to look after Patrick,” she told the kids. “Patrick was so lonely in heaven. He didn’t know anybody there. Now he has the best friend anyone could have.”
5. She Snipped Off Some of JFK’s Hair While He Was In the Casket
Prior to the burial, JFK’s body was kept in the East Room of the White House. Jackie visited her husband and snipped off a piece of his hair.
