Does Jay-Z Influence Fashion More Than Queen Bey?

Yahoo recently reported that searches for the words “Tom Ford” have increased 155% in the last month alone, and many are attributing the rise to the Jay-Z song “Tom Ford” that was featured on his Magna Carta Holy Grail album. As Jigga himself says, “I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford.”

Beyonce, on the other hand, hasn’t given such an epic shout out to any designer that we can recall (though most would probably sacrifice a limb for the honor). Nicki Manaj eloquently gave props to Michael Kors in her lyrics for Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$)”, and Lady Gaga’s song “Fashion” basically mentions every designer that ever lived. Plus, in “Suit and Tie,” Jay-Z again mentions Tom Ford (and All Saints and Alexander Wang).

It’s exciting to think about how music can influence fashion, and how Mr. Carter is the biggest reason for interest in Tom Ford. However, all the interest in Tom Ford can’t be attributed to Jay Z. Queries for Tom Ford have increased ninefold over the course of the entire last year, and Tom Ford has seen a rise in popularity apart from Jay with a whole host of other celebrities. Julianne Moore at the Golden Globes, Hugh Jackman at the Oscars, and Jon Hamm at the Mad Men Season 6 premiere all had notable Tom Ford outfits, and he’s had more than one incredible fashion show this year. Not to undermine the power of Hova, but we suspect these factors have also had something to do with Yahoo’s findings.

We love Tom Ford. We’ve never seen a man in Tom Ford who didn’t look unbelievably dapper, and Tom Ford’s women’s clothing has also proved to be awesome time and time again. So we’re glad to see his steep and steady rise in popularity. But we’d be curious to see the search engine stats for “pixie haircut” after Beyonce’s epic Instagram pic this week…
