A number of technology blogs have reported on leaked pictures of what appears to be a Jil Sander branded cell phone today. And while the project is certainly exciting, the first thing we did when we saw the photos was scratch our heads and say, “Why?”
Jil Sander joins Versace, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana among the high-end designer labels that have put their names on cell phones in recent memory. The Sander model is a Windows phone being produced with LG, which also makes the Prada phone. PocketNow reports it looks a lot like LG’s Optimus7, but that it appears to run a different software. Like all things Jil Sander, it features lines so clean you could serve dinner on them, and a very simple, straightforward design.
None of which answers our initial question: Why? We understand that licensing fees are a pretty quick way for fashion houses to make a quick buck, but why cell phones? How many people do you know toting around Versace’s monstrous purple wireless communication device? When have you ever heard a rumor that Research in Motion was going to release a Marc Jacobs-branded BlackBerry?
And what’s more, why aren’t the brands that are more concerned with technology hopping on the mobile phone bandwagon? Where, we ask you, is Calvin Klein‘s Sony Ericson phone? If Vivienne Tam can design a line of laptop computers, surely she can see the value in putting her name on a custom range of sleek communicators with full QWERTY keyboards. The list, as they say, goes on.
But for now, the buck stops here, Check out Jil Sander’s new phone, below.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
